Golf Terms Every Beginning Golfer Should Know.

So you're invited to a golf game by a good friend or a family member, you're a beginning golfer and you are nervous about embarrassing yourself on the golf course. You begin to worry about what club should i use, how long has this guy been playing, are my shoes ok? Well we get it, and we want to at least help you with some term that we think you should know.

  1. PAR- The number of strokes a first-class player should normally require for a particular hole.
  2. MULLIGAN- A mulligan is a second chance to perform another swing after the first chance went wrong through bad luck or a blunder.
  3. SLICE- Strike (the ball) or play (a stroke) so that the ball curves to the right ( for a left-handed player, the left) typically inadvertently.
  4. BIRDIE- A score of one stroke under par at a hole.
  5. BOGEY- A score of one stroke over par at a hole.
  6. DOUBLE BOGEY- When a golfer scores two strokes over par.
  7. TRIPLE BOGEY- When a golfer scores three strokes over par.
  8. FADE- A shot that, for a right handed golfer, curves slightly to the right and often played intentionally by a skilled golfer.
  9. CONDOR- When a golfer scores four strokes less than par on an individual hole.
  10. FAIRWAY- This is the stretch between the tee box and the green. Its length is usually from 30 to 50 yards. Your goal from the tee is to land the ball here.
  11. TEE BOX- The teeing area is where you start each hole and is one of the five defined areas of the course. It has a defined size and shape that is a two club length deep rectangle measured from the tee markers you are playing your round from. you can stand outside of the tee box as long as your ball is within the tee box.
  12. GREEN- Known also as the putting green consist of the area at the far end of a golf hole where the grass is kept shortest and on which golfers are meant to use a putter. The green represents the general target area of a golf hole as it contains the actual hole inside its perimeter.
  13. ROUGH- The state or length of the lawn is long. There is not much problem with shorter grass, it is simply an area that is difficult to hit the ball from.
  14. HAZARD- This is the area of the course that has difficult obstacles for the golfer to navigate. A course may include water hazards such as lakes and rivers, man made hazards such as bunkers and natural hazards such as trees or thick vegetation.
