Golf Club Distances: How Far Should I Be Hitting My Golf Ball?

Today we answer the myth about golf club distances and how far the average golfer should hit a golf ball. This is a question that most beginner and average golfers want to know. Well, let's see if we can get those questions answered. We will take you through the golf clubs one by one with as much detail as possible.

Golf Club Driver                                                               Golf Driver

Your golf driver is used to hit the ball of a tee for holes that have a long distance. Your driver is a very essential golf club and the selection of which club to purchase shouldn't be taken lightly. With the golf driver off of the tee you can hit 250-300 yards, the average golfer would be hitting more at 250 yards. A beginning golfer would be hitting a little lower, probably around 210 yards.

3-Wood                                                                           3-Wood Golf Club

The next club we will discuss is you 3-wood, this club is the most versatile club in your bag in that it can be used for tee shots as well as hitting from the fairway. As you play more and more, and you start to realize the distances of your shot, you can also invest in a decent Golf Rangefinder. With the 3-wood you can hit a distance of 217 yards, and the average golfer would be hitting around 174 yards.

                                                                      5-Wood

The 5-wood is a club used on the golf course fairway.  This is a club that is slowly being phased out and replaced with the hybrid golf club. With your 5-Wood you can get a nice carry off of the fairway and get a distance of 205 yards. Again, it is important to know the range distance for each hole. With this club the average golfer should be hitting around 164 yards.

The Hybrid                                                            Hybrid Golf Club

The new age of the fairway woods is here! Even though the hybrid golf clubs have been around for a while, there are still some golfers who prefer to use a 3 or 5 Wood instead. This is due to the fact that with the other woods you can get a bit more yards. With the hybrid you could hit around 201 yards, with an average golfer hitting around 161 yards.

 The Irons

Irons are divided into three sets: long irons (2, 3 and 4-irons), mid-irons (5, 6 and 7-irons) and short irons (8 and 9-irons, plus the pitching wedge). Long irons are used to hit the ball further with a shorter loft, while the short irons are designed to produce a higher loft.

                                            Long Distance Irons

The irons in your golf bag are the clubs that have more accuracy, and in most cases are preferred on the fairway over the woods, although the woods carry a slightly longer distance. With the 2, 3 and 4 irons you could hit a golf ball the distance of (2 Iron=195 yards , 3 iron= 189 yards and 4 iron = 181 yards), with the average golfer hitting around (2 iron= 170 yards, 3 iron= 151 yards, and 4 iron= 145 yards).

Mid Distance Irons                                                5 Iron Golf Club

Now let's discuss the mid-range irons!  Your mid range irons are the best irons for you to use on your approach. Your mid-range irons consist of golf club irons 5-7. If you encounter fairways with a lot of hills, these irons would be the best golf clubs to use. With that being said, the golf club distance for the irons should be around (5 iron=173 yards, 6 Iron=163 yards, and 7 iron=154 yards) with the average golfer hitting around (5 iron=139 yards, 6 iron=131 yards and 7 iron=123 yards.

                                                 Short Distance Irons

Finally, we arrive at the short-range irons which consist of your club irons 8, 9, and PW (Pitching Wedge). The short distance  irons have the highest-mass club heads or largest club heads, short shafts and high lofts for a moderate short distance. Add to that the pitching wedge that is used most often to get you out of a jam. With these short range irons you should be hitting around (8 Iron=143 yards, 9 Iron= 132 yards and PW=121 yards) with an average golfer hitting around (8 Iron=114, 9 Iron=106 and PW=97).

** The distances stated above are based on 100 mph golf club swing speed for a moderate golfer, 80 mph golf club swing speed for an average golfer, and a pro golfer based on 140 mph golf club swing speed.
